Charter was issued in 1907 for Mounds. William Biggerstaff was the first mayor. The first telephone at Mounds was in the Woods Drug Store. The first church building was a Union Church and is now the Library and community center.
The Interurban Electric Railroad operated a line that had a car leaving Mounds every hour. L.H. Koonce was the agent for the railroad. He took orders for merchandise from local business owners daily, and sent the orders to Cairo by the train conductor. The orders were filled then sent to Mounds via freight cars. Later in the railroad history, funeral cars were added to be sent to Beechwood Cemetery.
It is to be noted that Mounds also was the home of a number of prominent black businesspeople. Some of them were:
