This is a historic cemetery dating as far back as 1821 with the death of Helen Epps. The cemetery has been know by several names over the years, The Grand Chain Cemetery, Methodist Cemetery, Rhinnie Hill Cemetery, the Colored Cemetery and Ranney Cemetery. The later name of Ranney Hill Cemetery has been chosen to honor the first donators of land to the cemetery, Mr. William and wife Mrs. Marie Ranney. The Ranney's deeded one acre of land to the Trustees of the Colored Cemetery.
Mr. Louis and Mr. Carl Elliott donated additional acreage in later years as the cemetery swelled to capacity.
My original transcription of the cemetery was by a walk through of the cemetery by my immediate family and myself. We hand wrote every inscription of the stones down. I have since that time modified the records based upon the numerous accumulation of obituaries and death certificates that I have collected to prepare a more accurate accounting of the inhabitants of the cemetery.
On April 17, 2010 I revisited the cemetery and took pictures of the stones that were still above ground. A number of the stones have now sunken under the topsoil. Efforts will soon be underway to locate these stones and return them to their proper place. The Cemetery Association is working hard to maintain and restore the cemetery. Please email
ranney@grandchaingang.com to join the committee or to make donations to assist with the effort.
On the morning of January 15, 2012, I located additional records and photos of this cemetery on the Find a Grave site. It is listed as Forestview Cemetery.
